Blood-Stained Inkstone, Broken Dreams: The Bloody Secret of Dream of the Red Chamber

Do you know how the final forty chapters of Dream of the Red Chamber were “lost”?

In the nineteenth year of the Qianlong reign, a piece of news sent Xishan's Mourning Crimson Studio into an uproar: the man inside the Forbidden City had set his sights on Cao Xueqin's “idle book.” An adviser sneered in a memorial: What kind of Mirror of Love and Beauty is this? It's plainly a demon-revealing mirror, reflecting the Great Qing's dragon throne!

That night, the candle burned until dawn. Cao Xueqin, Zhi Yanzhai, Kong Shangren, descendants of the former Ming imperial house, spies from the Imperial Household Department... This group of people, who could never have sat together, made the most insane decision in history: they burned the final forty chapters of the 120-chapter manuscript.

It wasn't a fire. They weren't lost. They burned them with their own hands.

But that was only the beginning of the madness. Over the next ten years, this band of “madmen” did something even more unbelievable. They took the “seditious verses,” “secret histories,” and “death-worthy endings” they'd burned and, word by word, took them apart, scattered them, and encoded them. Over five, then ten years, they stitched them into every line of verse, every casual remark, and every glance in the first eighty chapters.

From then on, the world knew only an eighty-chapter Dream of the Red Chamber. No one knew that this “incomplete edition” concealed a complete elegy for a civilization. Even fewer knew that Cao Xueqin was not alone: behind him stood the last cultural outlaws of an entire age.

Three hundred years later, a thunderclap split the skies over Xishan and unearthed an iron box. The bloodstained inkstone, secret letters, and “evidence” written in invisible ink finally brought to light this “clandestine passage of civilization,” a plot spanning the reigns of three emperors: Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong.

Open this book, and you'll witness how, beneath the literary inquisition, a group of people used burned manuscripts to survive and fragments to preserve their souls.
