The Soul of the Camellia Beyond the Pipa Song

The Camellia Soul Beyond the Song of the Pipa

On an autumn night during the Yuanhe era of the Tang dynasty, by the banks of the Xunyang River, the exiled poet Bai Juyi was arrested in his tracks by the plaintive sound of a pipa. It came from a lone boat, played by a middle-aged woman of unusual charm. As they talked through the night, a tale from the heyday of the Tang dynasty unfolded with the music: she had once been a celebrated courtesan in Chang'an, deeply in love with Mustafa, an Arab merchant who dealt in spices. He promised to marry her, but left one tea season and never returned, leaving her to wait in hope for half her life. Years later, when Bai Juyi returned to Xunyang, he met his old acquaintance again at a Daoist temple, now gravely ill. Only then did he learn what a cruel joke fate had played: a tragic romance worthy of The Lady of the Camellias had already reached its end amid the torrent of history and the barriers between distant shores. This is the meeting of two souls cast adrift at the ends of the earth, and a lament composed with the pipa and a life, about love, waiting, and dignity.
