The Blood Pearl

Blood Pearl

In the final years of the Meiji era, mining magnate Ito Kenzo used his bloodstained fortune to take Kujo Sayako, the daughter of a fallen noble family, as his wife. This coarse, domineering tycoon treasured his wife like a pearl, but within her magnificent gilded cage lived a soul yearning for freedom. When tuberculosis began to ravage Kenzo’s once-powerful body, his bedside confession revealed the truth of a man who was both hateful and pitiable. Reborn, Sayako cast off her jewels and finery and turned her vast inheritance into books and ink, founding a girls’ school in the dawn of a new age. A pearl soaked in blood was ultimately tempered into a light of education, illuminating the destinies of countless women.
