Synopsis

【Bandits + Northeast China + War + Japanese spies + Manchukuo + Republican era + Romance + Collaborators】A woman's turbulent journey through a chaotic age, a blood-soaked epic of Northeast China. From bandit chieftain's wife to a secret pawn of the Japanese, she witnesses every secret behind Manchuria's birth, caught between love and hate, home and country… Manchurian Secret History, Part Two continues the first volume. Set against the real historical background of Northeast China from late 1931 to late 1937, it centers on the major event of Manchukuo's establishment and gradually brings the various factions onto the stage. Han Xuemei helps the collaborator Yoshiko take Puyi's empress, Wanrong, out of Tianjin by sea and escape to the Northeast. From then on, she stays by Wanrong's side and earns her trust, winning the Japanese invaders' favor as well. Puyi had arrived earlier, and under Japanese control, preparations to establish Manchukuo were quickly underway. Yoshiko also busied herself with the effort. Yun Feilong had secretly thrown in his lot with the Japanese years before and become a collaborator. Now he helps them try to persuade Ma Zhanshan to surrender and attacks the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army, dreaming of becoming one of the founding fathers. Han Xuemei earns merit during the empress's escape, and the Japanese actively try to win her over. She realizes she is sliding toward collaboration, but her father and husband have already become collaborators. She struggles inside, yet has no choice. Yun Feihu chooses to resist the Japanese to the end, then disappears after his defeat. Meanwhile, Japanese officials, Qing loyalists, Northeast Army leaders, and the resistance forces led by the Communist Party all take turns on the stage. Some sacrifice their lives for the cause of resistance; others sell out their country for wealth and status. Han Xuemei's eldest daughter, Yun Zhongyan, joins the Communist Party and goes to the Soviet Union to train as an agent. Her younger son, Yun Zhonghe, goes to the United States for further studies and joins the Nationalist Army after returning home, where he actively fights the Japanese. What roles will the younger generation play on the stage of history? Find out in the next volume…

Looking for High-Quality Historical Fiction. No Mindless Power Trips or Brain-Dead Plotting

I want high-quality historical fiction that’s engaging and doesn’t dumb things down or rely on brainless plots. It can be satisfying, but don’t treat readers like idiots. No stories like the one where the protagonist fools Cao Cao’s quartermaster about the provisions from the start, or those where a literati protagonist suddenly has the strength of a tyrant. They’re unoriginal and mindless...

Please Recommend High-Quality Historical or Alternate-History Novels with Highly Intelligent Characters

Anything is fine as long as it isn't brainless and the supporting characters don't suddenly lose all their intelligence.
