Synopsis

【Bandits + Northeast China + Local life + War + Japanese spies + Manchukuo + Republican era + Romance】A woman's turbulent journey through a chaotic age, a blood-soaked epic of Northeast China. From bandit chieftain's wife to a secret pawn of the Japanese, she witnesses every secret behind Manchuria's birth, caught between love and hate, home and country… The story takes place in Northeast China in the early twentieth century, spanning the period from the Russo-Japanese War to the establishment of Manchukuo. It encompasses a series of major events, including Zhang Zuolin's rise, the Zhili-Fengtian Wars, the Huanggutun Incident, Zhang Xueliang's switch of allegiance, the fall of the Beijing government, relations with the Northeast Army, and the September 18 Incident. My name is Han Xuemei. I was born in 1886, during the reign of the Guangxu Emperor, in Liaozhong County, Liaoning Province. My father was a horse trader famous far and wide, so I received a good education from a young age. When I was sixteen, the bandit chief Yun Feilong was pursued by Russians in the middle of the night. He fled to my home and pretended to be my husband, hiding under my quilt to escape capture. Since Yun Feilong knew my father, he seized the opportunity to ask for my hand in marriage. And so I became Yun Feilong's fourth concubine. Yun Feilong had started out as a peddler and was a typical ruffian and scoundrel. His ferocity, combative nature, and loyalty made him a bandit chief in those chaotic times. Because I was educated and had saved his life, Yun Feilong trusted me deeply. He put me in charge of the household and consulted me about many important matters. After we married, Yun Feilong first chose to serve Zhang Zuolin, who had little power at the time, and became one of his trusted generals. He then betrayed his sworn brother, the bandit chief Du Yutian, in exchange for a high position and generous rewards, consolidating his standing in the Northeast Army. But he was not satisfied, and eventually accepted the Japanese offer to buy his loyalty… After Zhang Zuolin was assassinated and the Young Marshal took power, Yun Feilong fell out of favor and sent me to Tianjin. As a result, I witnessed the September 18 Incident and a series of historic events, including preparations to establish Manchukuo. Yun Feilong's lust for power and women was intense, and he soon cast me aside. Yun Feihu was dissatisfied with his brother's willingness to serve the Japanese and resolutely joined forces with Ma Zhanshan to resist them…

Comprehensively reveal a shocking past event that happened in Northeast China, and the causes and consequences of the establishment of the Puppet Manchukuo. It starts from the 1920s and continues until the Japanese surrender at the end of the 1940s. The prototype of the story is a true story told by one of Zhang Xueliang's personal guards! The details are extremely shocking, especially the whole process of the Japs creating the Huanggutun Incident, as if they were there in person!

When I first read the title, I thought it was about the Puppet Manchukuo Kingdom. As I read on, I realized that it was about Zhang Zuolin and Yun Feilong. I didn't want to put it down. The story had ups and downs, was fascinating, and I couldn't put it down!

Clear away the fog of history and unlock the dusty past of Manchuria. The book breaks away from the rigid narrative of orthodox historical materials and explores unknown palace secrets and undercurrents of the times in the context of troubled times. The narrative is rich and suspenseful, restoring the vicissitudes of a special era. It not only shows the vicissitudes of the rise and fall of dynasties, but also reveals the various aspects of human nature under the power game. Reading it gives a glimpse of the truth of the ups and downs of the years.
