Qi Tongwei: In This Life, My Father Is Zhao Mengsheng's Benefactor

The bullet on Guying Ridge made Qi Tongwei kneel for the rest of his life.

When he opened his eyes again, he was seven years old. There was the crumbling brick bed, the drafty walls, and his farmer father, who in his previous life had gone to the city for work, suffered a crippling fall, and died young because he couldn’t afford treatment.

In his previous life, he had knelt and begged. In this life, he would stand tall and live.

He pointed outside the courtyard. “Dad, enlist in the army. There’ll be a war in three years. Earn some merits and you can become an officer.”

His grandfather was a veteran, and his grandfather’s old squad leader was now an important figure in Beijing. A letter riddled with misspellings sent his father racing toward a new life.

In 1979, his father carried a man surnamed Zhao out of a heap of corpses. The Zhao family owed him a life, and from then on, they trusted each other with their lives.

In 1980, his father earned a commendation, was transferred to Beijing, and received an apartment. The old squad leader’s niece took a liking to this Second-Class Merit recipient and became Qi Tongwei’s stepmother.

His father risked his life on the battlefield and climbed the ranks, while his son raced through school, skipping grades with ease.

Later, when someone tried to push him around, Qi Tongwei merely raised his eyes.

“My dad has tens of thousands of people under his command. Are you sure?”
