“Your Majesty.”

He began to speak. His voice was not loud, yet it somehow drowned out all the noise in the square, reaching every ear with a metallic edge and a cold, penetrating force.

“My fellow humans.”

He turned to face the people, his gaze slowly sweeping over their bewildered, devout, or faintly expectant faces. His voice began to gather strength, like a fire slowly catching.

“Just now, we all witnessed… a divine miracle.” He paused, letting the words hang in the air with a hint of barely concealed mockery. “Golden light filling the sky, lotuses falling from above, sacred chants cleansing our souls… How merciful, how majestic, don’t you think?”

His tone suddenly shifted, turning from measured to sharply challenging:

“But why does this mercy appear only today? Why does this majesty always arrive only after we pray?”

“Tell me! When a great drought struck Guanzhong, leaving a thousand miles of scorched earth and countless people dead of hunger, where was this golden light? When the Turks swept south on iron hooves, fires blazed along the frontier, and families were torn apart, where were these lotuses? When plague ran rampant, nine out of ten homes stood empty, and cries filled the skies, where were the sacred chants that cleanse the soul?!”
