Strange Tales from the Northeast: The Permafrost Files

Before his father disappeared, he warned Wu Liang: “If you hear me calling, don’t answer.” Wu Liang didn’t believe in those old Northeast superstitions. He just wanted to use recording equipment to find his father. Then, in an abandoned mine, he recorded a Morse code message. Decoded, it read: “The entrance is sealed.” The transmission was dated three days in the future. The boiler room in Shuangyashan, the village office beneath the ice of Jingpo Lake, the train running backward in the Greater Khingan Mountains… Every ruin held a rule: if you can hear the past, the past can reach out and grab the present. When Wu Liang finally answered the voice that had been calling for thirty years, he discovered that the background noise in every recording contained a word he had never once said aloud, yet which had been recorded for twenty years. It wasn’t a last message. It was a receipt. And he had signed for it long ago.
