Synopsis

On New Year's Eve in the third year of Xuanhe under the Northern Song, 1121 AD, only six years remained until the Jingkang Disaster in 1127, when the Northern Song would fall. It was also just over a year before the second month of the fourth year of Xuanhe, when Song Jiang would accept an amnesty in Water Margin. At this point in the story, Song Jiang and the other Liangshan leaders were deciding whether to pledge allegiance to the Song court and accept an amnesty, with the expectation that they would later campaign against Tian Hu, Wang Qing, and Fang La on the court's behalf. That day, during a banquet hosted by Le He, Liangshan's leader Song Jiang was sounding out the assembled chieftains on their attitude toward accepting the court's amnesty. Song Kun, a twenty-first-century soldier king, arrived after his soul transmigrated into the body of Song Jiang's only son. He was Song Ankun, the Liangshan-raised son who, like his father, was known in the martial world as “Little Timely Rain.” After Song Jiang surrendered to the Song court and was killed, Song Ankun would launch another rebellion at Liangshan. In the early years of the Southern Song, his repeated victories leading the Liangshan rebels to help Yue Fei repel the Jin earned him the title of Marquis of Yuncheng from Zhao Gou, founding the second generation of Liangshan leaders. At the banquet, the leaders of the Second Dragon Mountain faction, including the Pilgrim Wu Song and the Flowery Monk Lu Zhishen, opposed accepting the amnesty. Song Kun acted decisively to help his father Song Jiang bring the leaders into line and secure their agreement to the amnesty, then set about transforming his identity... But his strategy for accepting the amnesty differed from Song Jiang's historical approach. He would follow the example of Guo Yaoshi, using the amnesty as a pretext while building an independent power base. First, he would transform his status and expand his forces. He would seize the opportunity to help the Song court eliminate Tian Hu's stronghold in Hedong, then move to claim the Hexi Corridor and Longyou, territories in peril after the Tibetan counterattack the previous year, in the second year of Xuanhe, 1120 AD.
