The Spirit Traces of White Bamboo

Novel Title: The Mysteries of White Bamboo

One-line synopsis: Shanmei, a Yi woman branded a “jinx,” enters the mist-shrouded White Bamboo Mountain to prove her innocence, only to uncover a mining plot disguised as a haunting and a family massacre from thirty years ago. She ultimately transforms from a despised bride into the village's steadfast protector of its mountains and rivers.

Volume One: Birthmark and Fog (Chapters 1–15): Stigma and Strange Events

Focus: Establish Shanmei's predicament and the first eerie happenings on White Bamboo Mountain.

1. Blood on the Wedding Dress: On Shanmei's wedding day, people call the birthmark on her cheek a “devil's face” in the firelight. Her mother-in-law, Xihua, publicly smashes the tea bowl she is offered.

2. Silent Bamboo Weaving: Late at night, Shanmei weaves baskets in the woodshed by moonlight. An old wound on her fingertip splits open, and a drop of blood seeps into the bamboo strips. From next door comes the muffled cough of Jiuwu.

3. The First Strange Incident: The medicinal herb garden at the Li family's home on the east side of the village withers overnight. The leaves turn black and curl up like ghostly hands. Rumors blame the “new bride for tainting the earth's energy.”

4. White Fog from the Well: At dawn, thick, milky-white fog rises from the old well at the village entrance. It feels icy to the touch and does not clear for three days. Xihua orders Shanmei to fetch water, and the bucket rope breaks for no reason.

5. The Night Cry: Around midnight, the faint sound of a child sobbing seems to drift through the valley, and every household shuts its doors. Shanmei, familiar with the sounds of the mountains from her work gathering herbs, recognizes that the cries seem to come from the old forest.

6. Confrontation at the Ancestral Hall: Villagers gather and demand that the evil be driven out. The old hunter, Uncle Yan, silently smokes his pipe, while Shanmei's close friend Ami grips her hand. Jiuwu steps in front of Shanmei for the first time and says hoarsely, “There's no proof.”

7. Searching the Mountains for Answers: Shanmei enters the mountains with her old bamboo basket on her back
