The Mystery of White Bat Cave

The White Bat Cave on White Bamboo Mountain in Longtan Township, Xinyangbi, became a forbidden place because of the local legend that bats could steal people's souls. Awu, a boy from Fuchang Village who tended cattle, entered the cave searching for a missing yellow cow and stumbled upon a woman's corpse wrapped in vines. Liu Jiagui, chief of the county Public Security Bureau's investigation division, led a team into the mountains. Their initial assessment was murder, and the victim was identified as Lin Xiu, a woman from out of town who had been missing for half a month. During the investigation, the deliberate evasiveness of Lu Shizhong, the head of Fuchang Village, and the strange behavior of Rong Yaowu, owner of the stone quarry in Xiangyang Village, raised a host of questions. As the investigation dug deeper, Lin Xiu's secret relationships with the two men came to light. Meanwhile, Awu repeatedly experienced bizarre visions and heard strange crying near the cave, as if some force were drawing him in. A series of related cases followed, including a disappearance, villagers suffering relapses of old injuries, and a safety accident at the quarry. Behind these seemingly isolated incidents lay years of tangled relationships, illicit dealings, and a plan for revenge. Braving the obstacles posed by rural connections and the harsh mountain environment, Liu Jiagui relied on sharp insight and dogged persistence to piece together the truth. In the end, he exposed the murder motivated by love and uncovered how people had exploited the “supernatural” legend to cover up their crimes. My new work is out! Come read it on Tomato Novel.
