Tactical Frontline: We're Brothers

Firefighter Lin Ye stood before the faded “Heroic Service” banner in the museum, his fingertips unconsciously tracing the old scar on the back of his left hand. During a rescue three years ago, he'd been half a step too slow and lost the brother who'd stood by his side forever. Then one day, he caught a livestream of the professional league for the VR tactical combat game Tactical Frontline (TF) at an internet cafe. The image of teammates breaking through side by side was like a key, clicking open the passion he'd locked away.

“Let's put a team together.” He looked at the five people in the corner of the cafe: Su Xiao, a medical student fighting in the game to pay for her mother's surgery; Old Zhou, a bankrupt auto repair shop owner; a discharged recon soldier drowning in loan-shark debt; and A Jie, a 17-year-old hacker who was always saying, “I'm the best in the world.” Then there was Old K, a former pro shot-caller who kept calling them “noobs” while secretly putting in extra practice. This ragtag team, scraping together even enough money for training, stumbled its way into the TF circuit.

They had no prodigy's skills and no backing from investors. Chen Mo got chewed out for rushing in and getting himself killed, then smashed his headset. Su Xiao was afraid of gunfire but forced herself to learn battlefield first aid. Old Zhou's explosives kept blowing up his own teammates. But when Lin Ye called out, “We're brothers. Just listen for their footsteps and pinpoint them,” when Chen Mo learned to slam on the brakes and turn back to save Su Xiao, and when A Jie secretly found a sponsor for Old Zhou's repair shop, this makeshift crew somehow fought its way through the professional league.

This isn't a power fantasy about a cheat-enabled hero. It's about a group of ordinary people with scars, finding their true selves on a virtual battlefield. If you've ever risked your life for a brother or stayed up all night for a dream
