A Plot of Farmland in the Slanting Sun Over a Deserted City

In the twenty-sixth year of the Republic, the flames of war reached a small town in Jiangnan. Its walls lay in ruins, and the streets were strewn with the dead. The once-prosperous lanes were reduced to crumbling walls and rubble, while the desolate mudflats outside town became the last hope of the survivors.

In these turbulent times, he brought his elderly and young family members to the edge of the ruined town, breaking through the frozen earth in hopes of planting enough grain to keep them alive. Crushing taxes, local bullies, famine, and plague cast their shadows over this barren land.

With his rough hands, he sought a chance to survive among the stones. At the brink of despair, he held fast to his principles, tending the seedlings with sweat and weathering the storms with sheer grit.

There were no world-shaking achievements, only the perseverance to sow in spring and tend the fields in summer. There was no ambition to command the winds and clouds, only a determination to protect his family.

Beneath the setting sun over the ruined town, that plot of land was more than a means of survival. It was an ember of hope that refused to die in a time of chaos, reflecting the struggle and resilience of ordinary people fighting to survive in the torrents of their age.
