A Scholar for All Under Heaven: Fan Zhongyan

A Worthy of the Realm: Fan Zhongyan

Synopsis

He was a poor orphan who survived on meager meals, an upright official demoted three times and stripped of everything, a battle-hardened Confucian general who defended the western frontier, and the revered Lord Wen Zheng who wrote, “Be the first to worry about the world’s troubles, and the last to enjoy its pleasures.”

In the fifth year of the Tiansheng era, Fan Zhongyan passed the imperial examination and embarked on a thorny path to serve the people. From his desk in the Guangde county office to the court in Kaifeng’s imperial palace, from fortresses along the Western Xia border to the academy at Huazhou in Dengzhou, he weathered the rise and fall of political fortunes. Though banished three times, he never abandoned his original purpose. He faced one crisis after another, from the Empress Dowager’s power grab and an overbearing chief minister to Western Xia incursions and the collapse of his reforms. All the while, he upheld the conviction that “it is better to die speaking out than to live in silence” and remained true to his pledge to speak up for the people.

He dredged floodwaters in Suzhou and devised the “channeling water to attack the silt” method. He built fortifications in Yanzhou, prompting the Western Xia army to marvel, “Old Fan has tens of thousands of soldiers hidden in his belly.” He introduced the Qingli reforms, which ultimately fell short, yet breathed a spirit of change into the Song Dynasty. In his later years, he established the Fan Family Charity Estate, using his life savings to support his relatives and neighbors. On his sickbed, he penned the Yueyang Tower Essay, its resounding words illuminating the spirit of generations of scholars for a thousand years.

This is an epic of ideals and perseverance. It tells how a poor scholar, guided by conviction and a sense of responsibility, forged a path of devotion to the world amid the treacherous politics of the Northern Song court and the hardships endured by ordinary people, ultimately becoming an enduring monument to the ideal of “taking responsibility for the realm.”
