Reading The Art of War at Night

Reading The Art of War at night, lighting the lamp of business strategy.

After the bustle of the day fades away, my fingertips brush across the yellowed pages. Those words about war, strategy, and human nature seem to have come from battlefields a thousand years ago, growing ever clearer in the silence. With worldly distractions gone, it is easier to settle down and savor the stark wisdom of “War is based on deception,” and ponder the insight of “Know the enemy and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles without danger.” They are no longer distant military terms. Instead, they are like a mirror, revealing the struggles and balances at play in the world around us.

The depth of night resonates perfectly with the wisdom in the book. Reading “To subdue the enemy without fighting is the highest art,” I suddenly realize beneath the dim lamplight that this is not only the ultimate goal on the battlefield, but also a mark of composure in dealing with life. Reflecting on “adapt your strategy according to what is advantageous,” I seem to feel the warmth of flexibility within the night.

This is not light reading for before bed, yet in the stillness of the night it offers a sense of resonance across time and space: the strategies devised a thousand years ago already held the most profound insights into human nature and the ways of the world. By the time I finish reading for the night, my heart feels more open, and my thoughts wander farther.
