Me Within and Beyond the Besieged City

Core themes: This story explores the struggles, choices, and growth of men and women from different generations and social classes as they navigate the “besieged fortress” of love and marriage in contemporary China, an era of materialism, information overload, and diverse values.

Narrative structure: Told through three parallel storylines that occasionally intersect, the novel follows a post-1950s mother, a middle-class woman born in the 1980s, and a glamorous young city woman born in the 1990s. Spanning roughly three to five years, it covers the full range of life’s relationship issues, from traditional matchmaking to online dating, whirlwind marriages, choosing to remain child-free, having a second child, midlife crises, and the pressures of caring for the elderly.
