The Beggar Girl in the War Tent: I Lead Armies to Defend the Realm

I am Xiao Lie, Grand Commander of Zhenbei in the Great Jing, and I have guarded Yanmen Pass for three years, fighting more than seventy battles against the Xiongnu. One day, while patrolling the pass, I found a little beggar named A Chou, nearly dead from hunger. That night, she crept into my command tent and pulled out half of a bloodstained Xiongnu deployment map. “Grand Commander, the Xiongnu will attack the left camp in three days.” Only later did I learn that this scruffy beggar was an informant the Beggars’ Sect had planted outside the enemy camp. I used sand-table simulations to predict the battles, while she begged to gather military intelligence. Amid the beacon fires of Yanmen Pass, one of us commanded the troops against the enemy, while the other sent messages from the shadows. We were defending not only our land, but also the countless people behind us.
