System Reboot: The Plus-Size Designer’s Comeback

The life of Lin Xiaochai, a top student of finance, was like a crumpled shirt. Hormonal imbalances had made her go from slender to curvy, and she hunched over in a design company, working as the office errand girl. Having her designs stolen and taking the blame for others were everyday occurrences, until the day she was fired and got into a car accident.

When she woke up, a silver mark had appeared on her wrist. The “Good and Evil Balance System” had successfully bonded with her: whenever she was bullied, it presented her with a choice. Choosing the devil let her insult her opponent until they shut down, but triggered a binge-eating penalty. Choosing the angel meant swallowing her grievances, but could unlock fabric supplier connections and personal training sessions.

She chose the latter. She used financial reports to leave the coworker who stole her designs speechless, and restored her health with nourishing recipes. While livestreaming a tutorial on how plus-size girls could wear qipao, she suddenly switched into workplace queen mode: “Do you understand the stress analysis of this frog closure? In finance, that’s called a Pareto-optimal solution!”

Even more unbelievably, Shen Yizhou, the former soldier coaching her to correct her stoop, turned out to be a part-time model who wore motorcycle gear. He used military-style training to make her stand tall, while secretly sending rockets to her livestream. When haters swarmed her, the muscles beneath his camouflage tattoos tensed. “You dare insult the person I protect?”

She went from being mocked for being “too fat to fasten a frog closure” to putting plus-size qipao on the runway at Fashion Week. She went from hiding behind the camera out of insecurity to telling millions of followers, “My waist-to-hip ratio is the best design of all.” On the day the System’s progress bar filled up, Shen Yizhou fashioned a ring out of a fishhook. “Finance can’t calculate how much I love you, but my six-pack will always be here for you to lean on.”

It turned out that a comeback was never about getting thin as a lightning bolt. It was about daring to wear a backless qipao and letting the softness at your waist shine, too.
