A Dust-Stained Heart Beneath the Bodhi Tree

He had once been a soul tormented by karmic fire in the Avici Hell, enduring five hundred kalpas in the skin-peeling hell for his hatred after massacring a city. He had also been a hungry ghost, with a swollen belly and a narrow throat, wandering amid illusions and searing pain as punishment for his greed. He had been a wild deer in the deep mountains, living in constant fear beneath the shadows of hunters’ bows and wolves. And he had been one of the asuras, glimpsing the emptiness of existence amid endless strife.

The wheel of the six realms ground his soul through a thousand hardships and ten thousand agonies. Yet with each descent, it also buried a glimmer of light within him: the illusory water he gave away in the realm of hungry ghosts, the warmth of the boy he remembered as a wild deer, and his reluctance to fight in the realm of the asuras. Each became a thread that could free him from karma.

At last, he was reborn in the human realm as Chen Yan, the son of a farming family. When he was fifteen, the sound of Buddhist scriptures beneath the old locust tree at the village entrance awakened memories long sealed away. Only then did he realize that all he had experienced was no dream, but the imprint of cause and effect. He shouldered his pack and entered Wuxiang Temple, beginning with chopping wood and carrying water. He observed the Five Precepts and cultivated the Ten Virtues, protecting the scriptures in a mountain fire and contemplating his former lives in meditation.

After thirty years beside the grottoes and the bodhi tree, he had witnessed every illusion of reincarnation. At last, amid falling blossoms on a spring day, he understood the truth of “abiding nowhere.” As seven-colored Buddha light swept through the grotto, he dissolved into it like a wisp of smoke. Only then did he realize that his passage through a thousand kalpas had all been for this: to refine his worldly heart beneath the bodhi tree until it became a clear mirror. From hell to nirvana, it turned out, lay only the practice of being willing to let go.
