Introduction to "Spring on the Loess Slope"
On the Loess Plateau in 1963, the Hongqi production brigade was facing a spring full of challenges and hopes. After being hit hard by last year's autumn floods, there were very few seeds left in the warehouse, and the barren land on the north slope made spring plowing even more difficult. Li Jianguo, a veteran and captain of the production brigade, took on the task of leading the villagers out of poverty and increasing their income with the tenacity tempered on the battlefield.
From blasting rocks to open up wasteland, building canals to divert water, and improving soil, Li Jianguo, together with accountant Wang Xiulan and village party secretary Zhao Laoshi, led the members to start the tough battle of spring plowing. The men hammered and blasted rocks to open up fields, the women sown, fertilized and took good care of the fields. Even half-grown children carried baskets to collect manure and accumulate fertilizer. The entire loess slope was in full swing. Faced with many difficulties such as shortage of seeds, sick livestock, and insufficient farm tools, they used their collective wisdom and sweat to overcome them one by one. Neighbors helped each other to collect surplus grain, asked for medical help overnight to save cattle, and the commune asked for help and borrowed farm machinery, sowing the seeds of hope in this barren land.
The story includes the mutual support of Li Jianguo and his wife, the help of the villagers, and the struggles of ordinary people under the tide of the times. Literacy classes have ignited women's desire for knowledge, experimental fields carry the hope of increasing production and income, and newly built canals nourish the dry land.
