He was a grain of sand at the bottom of the Ganges, yet became one of Heaven's most wanted criminals.
The shattered glass lamp was not his true crime. His real sin was that a grain of sand dared to “remember the light.”
Sha Wujing, General Who Rolls Up the Curtain. At the Peach Banquet, he accidentally shattered a glass lamp, and blood splashed across the Jade Pool. The Jade Emperor flew into a rage: “This sand is guilty!” Banished to the Flowing Sand River, he endured seven days of a thousand arrows piercing his heart in each tribulation, then spent a hundred years atoning by devouring human flesh and blood. Nine skulls of pilgrims seeking the scriptures, strung together and bobbing in the river of blood, were his only link to Buddhahood, and his eternal shackles.
On the journey west, he was silent as stone, shouldering a burden of ten thousand jin and bearing an unforgivable original sin. His senior brother's defiance inspired his admiration; he understood his second brother's heartbreak; his master's compassion was his only salvation. But when the golden cudgel of “Sun Wukong” smashed Tang Sanzang's spine, when corpses littered Flower-Fruit Mountain and a demon king sneered, “How can a sinner be worthy of seeking the scriptures?” Sha Wujing's spine broke, too.
“Your sin is that you remember the shape of every drop of water.” Amid swirling rings of smoke in the South Sea, the real Wukong pierced through the deepest scab on his soul.
Why did a grain of sand become a demon?
Because it refused to sink into darkness forever and dared to yearn for the light of the sun and moon!
Why did the glass lamp shatter?
Because it reflected the filthiest lie in all thirty-three layers of Heaven!
Why wouldn't the nine skulls sink?
Because what they bound together was the Buddha-nature and karmic burden of Jin Chanzi's ten cycles of reincarnation!
From the battlefield of the false and true Monkey Kings, to the demon trees in the Forest of Forgetting that devoured memories, and then the wicked demon kingdom that imprisoned the Pure Glass Immortal Maiden... Sha Wujing trampled through thorns, gathered fragments of glass, and pieced together the bloody truth. It turned out that so-called “atonement” was nothing but a colossal lie. And “Wujing,” or “Awakened to Purity,” meant seeing through the illusion of sin and reforging, amid blood and fire, a heart more resilient than glass.
