Where There's Life, There's Hope

The storms of fate never let up, and life's road is covered in thorns. Even so, the protagonist chooses to keep living with strength.

In 1988, the flames of a clan feud in southern China left a crack in his life. In 1989, he was imprisoned for ten years because of the feud. The cold iron bars could not extinguish his longing for life. In 1998, his childhood friend went to prison, and he was implicated, too. Two and a half years of confinement left him shadowed by loneliness and despair. In 2001, trouble involving a friend landed him behind bars again, this time for four and a half years.

Every time he fell, every time darkness swallowed him, he cried out in his heart: “I'm still alive. That's wonderful.” In plain, unadorned language, this novel tells a true and deeply moving story, revealing the complexity of society, the fragility of human nature, and the fading of loyalty and affection. It portrays the protagonist's tenacious attachment to life through endless hardship.
