The Legend of Qin: Enlightenment from a Porcelain Pillow, Joining the Heavenly Sect Under Bei Mingzi

A dream brought on by a porcelain pillow sent his soul tumbling into the final years of the Warring States period. When he opened his eyes again, Chen Xiuyuan had become an obscure young disciple of the Daoist Celestial Sect. The Hundred Schools of Thought schemed against one another, while war and smoke blotted out the sky over the Seven Kingdoms. All he wanted was to cultivate in peace and stay away from the turmoil.

But his habit of squatting by a stream to contemplate the water and seek the Dao was simply too conspicuous. Spring turned to autumn, and he never let up through the cold and heat, spending all day staring blankly at a stagnant pool. Everyone in the Celestial Sect thought they had taken in a simpleton. Even Chisongzi could only shake his head and sigh.

Only Beimingzi, who had been in seclusion for many years, suddenly opened his eyes one day and said, “I will teach this child.”

His words stunned everyone.

Beimingzi had taken only two disciples in his life. One was Chisongzi, now the head of the Celestial Sect. The other was Xiaomeng, who had defeated every elder in the sect by the age of eight. Now, after ten years in seclusion, he had unexpectedly made an exception for a “simpleton.” Chisongzi was puzzled, and Xiaomeng was unconvinced. Until one day, the boy held a willow branch and gently tapped the stream. He lifted half a river into the air, where it hung suspended, perfectly still.

Xiaomeng cried out in shock.

One dream on a porcelain pillow, and the Dao came naturally. And what he had brought back from that dream was far more than this.
