Monk in the Mountains of Northeast China: People in the Village Regard Me as a Living God

When I was eighteen years old, I escaped from danger and went deep into the Changbai Mountains. I practiced in the Broken Mountain Temple for twenty years. There is no flying with a sword, no slaying demons. What I learned was the folk skills passed down by the old Taoist priests outside the Guan Dynasty, such as observing Feng Shui, solving evil spirits, crossing the Yin, settling the house, and guarding the mountains and countryside. When I went down the mountain again, the old village had already changed. A woman crying at her grave in the middle of the night, old grudges lingering in the old house, old legends circulating in the mountains and forests, and one after another strange folk things happened one after another. When people in the village saw my skills, they respected me like a god. But I am the only one who knows that what is cultivated in Taoism is never about supernatural powers, but about the human heart and the cause and effect in the world.
