The Stock Market's Uncertainties

Set against the sweeping changes in China's stock market over more than three decades, from 1993 to 2025, Stock Market Uncertainty tells the story of six young appliance repairmen from the old city of Linjiang who are swept into the markets by the tide of the times, their fortunes rising and falling with it. The protagonist, Wu Linghui, lives by his grandfather's plain-spoken lesson: “Do your duty, and time will prove you no fool.” Starting with an appliance repair training center, he earns his first fortune through diligence and honesty, then seizes the moment to move into investment promotion services and ride the wave to success. But when a bull market frenzy takes hold, his five friends each lose their way in the chase, undone by greed, impatience, hesitation, suspicion, and other flaws. In the end, they are wiped out, miss the rally, or become trapped in losing positions, and their brotherhood falls apart. Only Wu Linghui sticks to a cautious approach. Though he suffers crushing setbacks, from stumbling in his business ventures to losing a fortune worth tens of millions and being wiped out by leveraged bets, he remains alert and self-disciplined amid uncertainty. By contrast, the five brothers who left for distant shores later grow rich again amid a boom in investment promotion. But as their greed swells, they turn to the dark path of fabricating shell companies posing as foreign investors and defrauding businesses. Their crimes are eventually exposed, and they end up behind bars. Wu Linghui, meanwhile, returns to his modest roots, pays off his debts through steady, measured gains, and lives out a peaceful, ordinary life. In community classes, he shares with the next generation what he learned from a lifetime of gains and losses. Through the six men's shifting fortunes and friendships over thirty-two years, the novel reveals the stock market's one unchanging truth: uncertainty. Behind the red and green candlesticks lies a magnifying glass held up to humanity's greed, anger, and delusion. Tales of overnight riches are illusions, and quick profits from leverage are double-edged blades. Only by doing one's duty and resisting greed and delusion can one find a place to stand amid life's changing tides. With its unadorned prose, the novel paints a portrait of ordinary people in a changing age. It is both a chronicle of the stock market's ups and downs and a timeless warning about the righteous path and the value of simplicity.
