Journey to the West: Tang Sanzang's Pilgrimage to the West

Tang Sanzang, a revered monk of the Tang Dynasty, was compassionate and devoted to Buddhism. His sole wish was to obtain the Mahayana scriptures and save all living beings. To spread the Dharma and help the people, he resolutely left his home in Chang'an and set out alone on the long journey west to the Thunderclap Monastery. Along the way, he successively took in Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, and the White Dragon Horse, forming a group united in goodness that would journey together to Mount Ling. The long road west brought one hardship after another. The four travelers faced eighty-one trials, from the schemes of demons and monsters to natural disasters and illusory realms, while resisting countless temptations of beauty and power. Sun Wukong wielded extraordinary powers to defeat demons and monsters; Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing each did their part and served loyally. Through it all, Tang Sanzang never wavered from his original purpose, remaining steadfast in his faith and true to his path of cultivation. A hidden hand was at work throughout their pilgrimage, with a power that followed the Buddha's decree secretly watching over them. It never intervened openly, but quietly resolved dangers and cleared obstacles at moments of crisis. Invisible yet present from beginning to end, this power revealed its unfathomable might. After fourteen years of hardship and travel, the four companions crossed countless mountains and rivers, overcame trial after trial, and finally reached Mount Ling to retrieve the scriptures. Tang Sanzang completed his merit and attained enlightenment. This journey west was not only a pilgrimage to seek Buddhist teachings, but also a path of transformation on which the companions overcame their inner demons and grew stronger. It embodies the precious ideals of perseverance, goodness, and the pursuit of truth.
