In 1940, the German army swept across Europe, leaving Britain alone. Irene Winter, the mathematical genius who deciphered the Enigma code at Bletchley Manor, was selected by MI5 to perform an impossible task - to infiltrate the Abwehr, Nazi Germany's core intelligence agency. Eileen was born into a mixed-race British-German family. Her father was a British diplomat and her mother was a German aristocrat. This identity makes her a perfect double agent candidate. She received brutal training from the British Special Operations Executive (SOE), sneaked into Berlin as a German refugee, and was recruited by Abwehr as a cryptanalyst with her outstanding mathematical skills. In Berlin, Irene dealt with the three forces of the Gestapo, the SS and Abwehr. She reported "loyalty" to her superiors and passed intelligence to Britain, but at the same time she found herself trapped in a deeper quagmire - there was a secret group within Abwehr that opposed Hitler, and they tried to use her as a bridge to communicate with the Western Allies. At the same time, MI5 sent her former lover and agent Thomas Harris to sneak into the European continent as her contact person. The two reunited behind enemy lines and rekindled their old relationship, but they didn't know that they each carried different missions and secrets. As the war progressed, Irene was involved in a series of key intelligence operations that changed the course of the war: deciphering German codes, delivering the Normandy landing deception plan, and revealing the Nazis' secret weapons development.
