Snow Crane Studio

The waters of the Changjiang in Muzhou have washed away a century of porcelain-making spirit in Changnan Town.

In the final years of the Xianfeng reign, Chen Xueqiao cut off a finger in defiance of orders. In the twenty-fourth year of Guangxu, Zhou Shichang froze to death at the dragon kiln. During the Republic of China era, Tao Laobing died in the flames, clutching porcelain to his chest. Seven generations of artisans paved the road of inheritance with their flesh and blood.

From sacrificial kiln boy to master of Xuehe Studio, Chen Yanzhi struggled to survive in the narrow space between Changnan and Muzhou. Li Shouzhuo hid a code in the patterns of bricks, while Li Muhuan lost the kiln’s fire amid the tides of commerce. In 2027, Li Nianhe guarded an empty tomb, answering the ancestors with the Yi woman Ago through breaths in a pattern of three short and one long.

The kiln fire may die out, porcelain may shatter, and people may perish.

But when the wind of memory blows across the waters of the Changjiang, there are always ripples.

Every generation has its own crane to set free; every generation has its own kiln to protect.

And obsession has never been about perfection. It is about the courage to keep trying to become whole in a broken world.
