I thought I would be like all the people in Jiangcheng, spending my life in the mist of the Yangtze River and the hustle and bustle of the city. Until that sultry summer of 1993, my eighty-five-year-old grandmother brought back a yellowed notebook from her hometown in Luoxian County—a relic left by my grandfather, a folklore scholar of the Republic of China who had been missing for many years. What the notes record is not ordinary knowledge, but another side of Jiangcheng that has been unknown for hundreds of years: the mysterious shadows under the Yangtze River, the echoes of tears in the old-style mansions in the old concessions, the looming visions in the forests of Moshan... When I followed the method in the notes for the first time and witnessed supernatural phenomena in the old alley where I lived, I realized that this "Jiangcheng Weird Book" is not an academic study, but a warning and a inheritance.
