The Dark Lord is the theoretical fifth God of Chaos, prophesied throughout history by both the Eldar and Men. But it was first mentioned publicly during the final stages of the Siege of Terra during the Horus Heresy. The Lord of Darkness represents total destruction without cause or purpose. While it was initially speculated that the Dark Lord was Horus or the Daemon Samus corrupted by Chaos, it eventually became apparent that the Dark Lord was in fact destined to be the Emperor of Mankind. When the Emperor faced Horus aboard the Vengeful Spirit during the final stages of the Siege of Terra, he realized that there was no hope of victory unless he gave himself greater power. Out of desperation, the Emperor absorbed the power of the Warp on an unprecedented scale, eventually emerging as an obsidian sphere surrounded by lightning. The Emperor's power was so great that he accidentally killed all the Custodes around him and turned them into severely burned zombies. The Emperor began to sweep across the madness of the Inevitable City, causing daemons, the Lost and the Damned, and even traitorous Space Marines to flee before him. The Emperor by this time had risen to become a full-fledged God of Chaos, and he believed that such an action was necessary to kill Horus and save humanity. Malcador was deeply saddened to see his friend become like this, and believed that the Emperor's actions had gone too far. But it was then that the Emperor met Aulanius Persson, John Grammaticus, Litto, and Garviel Loken. Persson faced his friend and brought him back from the abyss of corruption by calling upon the Emperor's own humanity. Although the Dark Lord's emergence was prevented by the Emperor's decision, the God of Chaos will appear at the prophesied moment, for time has no meaning to Chaos, and the Dark Lord's servants and his rule already exist.
