The Calamitous Legitimate Princess

Everyone in Changping believed the young master of the Duke of Xue’s household was destined for an early death and would never marry in this life. No one expected an imperial decree arranging his marriage to throw the whole city into an uproar. The people of Changping: “What? The young master of the Duke of Xue’s household petitioned for permission to marry Meng Jiu Si, the legitimate second daughter of the Dingyuan General’s household? Isn’t she his younger brother’s wife? Shameless! He deserves to die young. May he reach bliss in the afterlife soon!” The Meng family girls: “What? Has the young master gone blind? He wants to marry Meng Jiu Si, that calamity who has nothing but a pretty face and a heart as poisonous as a snake’s? He deserves to die young. May he reach bliss in the afterlife soon!” Meng Jiu Si’s eldest brother: “What? The young master spends all day bedridden and can’t even get out of bed, yet he dares dream of marrying my beautiful, peerless sister? He’d only ruin her life. He deserves to die young. May he reach bliss in the afterlife soon!” Meng Jiu Si looked utterly bewildered. “What? Who said I was going to marry the young master?” In her previous life, she had lived in confusion and died in misery. Now that she had a second chance at life, she had scores to settle and wrongs to avenge. She had no time to get married. The young master: “My dear, I didn’t say it. It was fate. You can’t defy fate!” Meng Jiu Si: “To hell with fate! You’re practically at death’s door, and I’m not marrying you!” The young master: “If I die, the house is yours, the fortune is yours, and everything I own is yours. It’s a great deal!” Meng Jiu Si thought it over. “That is a pretty good deal!” And so, everyone waited eagerly day and night until the flowers had all withered, yet the young master remained stubbornly alive…
