I mainly recommend dark stories. To me, dark means doing whatever it takes: no need to be reasonable, no rambling, and no talk of humanity or rationality. As long as the characters can keep up a facade and the story's internal logic holds, that's enough. Whether it's urban, sci-fi, fantasy, or supernatural, I'll recommend any kind of novel as long as it fits my tastes. I've read every book I recommend, and each one is at least several hundred thousand characters long.
