The word "rebel" is in quotation marks because their rebellion puts them in opposition to the ruling court's claim to legitimacy at the time. For instance, Li Shimin's rebellion against the Sui and Liu Yu's uprising in Jingkou do not mean that history considers them rebels.
Some characters who weren't emperors to begin with will also ascend the throne, such as Liu E, Yang Miaozhen, and Gao Changgong.
