Zhuang Qinghe had secretly loved Duan Ke for years and had been his friend for years, but they broke up less than three months into their relationship.
The reason was simple. On the night she had planned a surprise, her boyfriend was busy looking after his sick white moonlight.
She first met Chen Hejing at a private gathering among people in their circle. Everyone there was fawning over him, openly or otherwise.
That night, she had an argument with her boyfriend and left midway through. Heavy snow began falling in the courtyard.
The man looked weary. His pale fingers pressed against the bridge of his nose. He barely glanced at her, only calmly instructing the driver who had come with him:
"Get Miss Zhuang an umbrella."
Three months later, Zhuang Qinghe woke up after getting drunk. The man had his shirt collar open, with a conspicuous bite mark on his neck. His mother caught them.
When they met afterward, Zhuang Qinghe apologized and offered to take responsibility. She accidentally pressed her phone, and a voice message from her family urging her to marry played aloud.
"Miss Zhuang, perhaps you should consider marrying me."
Chen Hejing's tone was cool and detached. "I can give you everything you need."
He sent her a prenuptial agreement worth nine figures and a diamond ring worth hundreds of millions, bought at an overseas auction. He also took care of a long-standing problem for her.
Zhuang Qinghe had heard gossip from her ex-boyfriend that this elusive head of the Chen family had lately been driven to distraction by his family's pressure to marry.
On a snowy night three days later, Zhuang Qinghe took the signed agreement and knocked on the tightly shut door.

They say Chen Hejing never takes off his wedding ring, though no one has ever seen what Mrs. Chen looks like. The marriage was only to appease his family, so how invested could he possibly be?
Everyone understood. This marriage of convenience wouldn't last.
Later, Duan Ke regretted it and tried to win back his true love.
Zhuang Qinghe confronted him in the snow. Chen Hejing strode over, draped a dark coat over her, and covered her reddened ears.
The usually distant man pulled his wife into his arms and soothed her in a low voice. "Are you still angry with me about that night?"
"Don't get yourself worked up and hurt yourself or the baby."
Duan Ke watched them, his face deathly pale.
At the gathering that night, Chen Hejing, who never usually waited on anyone, patiently picked the meat out of crab shells for her.
Zhuang Qinghe turned her head and asked coldly, "Where did you get a baby?"
Chen Hejing gave a low laugh and coaxed her softly. "There's one right here. I haven't managed to soothe it, and it's still throwing a tantrum at me."
