Before they married, Su Wei and Ji Boyu were strangers who had met only once.
At the time, she was a reporter constantly on the road.
Ji Boyu was a diplomat then, his sharp eloquence on the diplomatic stage tempered by a mature, composed bearing. He was both refined and unruffled.
On the day they registered their marriage, Su Wei arrived half an hour late and hurriedly fixed her appearance in the car.
Ji Boyu waited patiently for her, his deep-set features accentuated by his dark coat.
"Here, wipe that off." The man beside her offered her a handkerchief.
Su Wei took it. Spring snow had just begun to fall in March, dampening the dark strands of hair against her cheek. Slightly dazed, she asked softly, "Why did you choose me?"
He had many options before he came, yet he had chosen to meet her alone.
Ji Boyu looked at her with a calm expression.
"Since this was arranged by our families, you were the most suitable choice."
Everyone said that Ji Boyu came from a distinguished family. He was gentle and refined, without a trace of airs, yet commanding enough. Nobody could find fault with the way he treated others.
There was every advantage to marrying him, except one: he was too restrained when it came to women. He probably wouldn't come home often, was cool toward his wife, and certainly wouldn't bend over backward for any woman.
Su Wei only half believed them at first, but after meeting him, she became completely convinced.
But later, she often remembered how out of place she'd felt when she first arrived at the Ji household. One night, suffering from the cold and a stomachache, she didn't want to trouble anyone, so she endured it in silence and went out.
Ji Boyu happened to be coming back from outside. Frowning, he stopped her, picked up the pale woman and carried her back to bed, called a doctor, and took thoughtful care of her.
He even asked the housekeeper how to make her a special meal.
He also once caught a coworker confessing his feelings to her.
That night, snow fell. The jealous man held her in front of his desk, his long fingers wrapped around her hand as he taught her to write her nickname in delicate floral script.
She remembered him saying, "If you get one stroke wrong, you'll have to practice all over again tonight."
He coaxed her into crying out "hubby" all night.
[Bonus Scene]
Asked about his New Year's wish on camera, Ji Boyu's wedding ring gleamed on his left ring finger. He smiled faintly. "May the land know peace, may my wife have a joyful and peaceful life, and may I stay by her side for the rest of our lives."
After the interview, he handed out wedding candies, saying he'd learned to make the rabbit-shaped gummies just to make his wife happy. In the eyes of outsiders, this steady diplomat Ji carried his family and country in his heart, along with the wife he cherished.
