Her Mask

After Yang Wen got into a high school in the city, she tried hard to carry herself with more confidence.

Life at the prestigious private school wasn’t easy. Her classmates were always showing off shoes that cost tens of thousands of yuan, or bragging about how expensive their trips around the world were. Their words and manner made their disdain for her family background perfectly clear.

She ignored their malice and tried to keep looking ahead.

That summer, when she started her second year, a boy named Bai Ming transferred into her class. Her classmates said his watch cost several million yuan.

They became deskmates.

Bai Ming: “Have we met before?”

Yang Wen looked at the lingering bruise on his brow and didn’t dare tell the truth. She just kept quiet.

Bai Ming always thought she was a shy, reserved girl. She was good at studying, quiet, and helpful, and excelled in every way.

Then one day, she knocked two guys with dyed blond hair to the ground with a single punch, and he realized there was more to her than met the eye.

.

After graduating from university, on a scorching summer day, Yang Wen had just made a killing in the stock market.

With her hair in a bun, she walked out carrying a pour-over coffee from the campus cafeteria. Out of nowhere, she spotted Bai Ming beneath a tree.

It had been ages since they’d last seen each other. She didn’t dare act familiar with her former deskmate. With a straw between her lips, she shuffled past him in her flip-flops without so much as looking his way.

He gave her a half-smile. “Did someone sew your mouth shut? You don’t recognize me anymore?”

The boyish awkwardness had given way to sharp edges. His eyes were deep, no longer innocent in the slightest, and he watched her like a leopard waiting to pounce.

Yang Wen awkwardly greeted him.

Bai Ming was baffled. “Is your mouth only good for kissing? Can’t do anything else?”

Yang Wen hurriedly shoved him. “Don’t talk nonsense.”
