The Interview

The author's comeback work. If I don't write again, I'll get rusty. I wrote this to introduce a new member of the "serving a life sentence" crew: Li Dang (also known as Yi Dang, the protagonist of A Killer Paradox, played by Choi Woo-shik).

Synopsis: Li Dang (Yi Dang) finished his military service six months ago. He has no plans for the future, and is juggling university classes and a part-time job at a convenience store while dreaming of going to Canada on a working holiday.

At this point in the story, he hasn't accidentally killed anyone yet. He's just constantly feeling lost amid his various part-time jobs. Canada isn't his promised land, either, just one way he hopes to escape Country H.

Yushan University, where he studies, has plenty of powerful departments dealing in petrochemicals, semiconductors, automobiles, shipbuilding, aviation and energy, and the life sciences. This also influences his choice of part-time work, though in reality his options are extremely limited. As the saying goes, "People in Country H can't go their whole lives without XX, XX, and XXX." That's how terrifying monopolies are.

He interviewed for several jobs listed by Yushan University's career center: Zhengzhen Group, Chengyun Transport Group, and the Yushan branch of Daehan Securities. As expected, he was rejected by all of them.

Oh, well. A convenience store job may be boring, but at least it's something to do. That's better than staying home and mooching off his parents. Just as he was thinking this, a notification popped up on his phone: he had new email.

Three messages.

From the employment agencies partnered with Zhengzhen Group, Chengyun Transport Group, and Daehan Securities, where he'd interviewed.

The subject lines said he'd been hired.

But the job descriptions...
