Also known as: I Turned to the Government in an Infinite-Flow Horror World / Reviewing Viral Online Horror Videos
The horror world descended, and supernatural phenomena erupted across the globe. Livestreams opened as an incomprehensible horror variety show platform arrived in the world, randomly selecting ordinary people to enter horror-game instances.
Qingxin, a registered Taoist priest and college student, read the official notice on her phone: "Regarding the new type of special horror phenomenon, those selected are mostly between the ages of 19 and 22. All college students are advised to stay alert." She thought it was nothing but alarmist nonsense, turned around, flopped onto her dorm bed, and started dreaming.
When she opened her eyes, the familiar college dorm had changed completely. Cobwebs and gray fog filled the room, and colorful comments streamed across the host's screen.
Qingxin tried to convince herself she was still dreaming.
A gigantic monster lunged at her and bared its fearsome maw.
Qingxin marveled, "...This dream is pretty realistic," then went right back to enjoying her sleep.
The viewers watching the stream: [Is this girl going to be okay? We're doomed! Of all people, why did they have to pick these college students for the horror show that decides the world's fate? Now the horror really is going to invade the real world!]
The alien observers were already losing interest: [Earth's civilization is nothing special.]
The observers thought she was just an idiot who couldn't read the situation. But then, on the horror section of the livestream app, which was only for monsters, a new rulebook quietly appeared:
[Horror World T-006 Monster Survival Rules
1: Humans are edible. They're our best source of nourishment.
2: Emotions are useless. Our duty is to devote everything to the greatest Book of Horrors.
3: All horror-show streamers are choice food. To grow stronger, hunt them down as much as possible while abiding by the rules.
4: Stay away from Qingxin!!! Stay away from Qingxin!!! (Crossed out) Qingxin is a monster's best friend. We must love one another and coexist in harmony with Qingxin.]
The instance boss stared blankly at the app's final blood-red rule. A pretty girl with low twin ponytails suddenly appeared before it, rubbed a playing-card talisman made of intertwined ones and zeroes, and beamed. "Now, take this talisman attack, a blend of ancient and modern techniques!"
Newly spawned monster: This is a disaster!!! Qingxin has corrupted the monster version of the app's rules!!! Mom, help! This monster can't get out of the instance!
The gods who observed the universe were created by advanced civilizations. They became a platform for livestreaming lower civilizations, a source of amusement for higher-dimensional spectators. With boundless malice and the supernatural, they brought a calamity upon Earth's civilization.
They drew power from human fear, waiting for the despair of the young "trainees" selected to enter the horror world. But then they realized: ...Huh?
These college student trainees... seemed... kind of off. How had so much time passed without a single horror phenomenon invading Earth? Did that mean... these college students had cleared every special horror instance?!
The Book of Horrors peeked at its own variety-show livestream and saw:
A civil engineering student tossed aside his hard hat and shouted, "Everything that exists has a reason!" He charged at the instance boss alongside the construction-site monsters: "The wind is howling, the horses are neighing! Charge, everyone! Let's take down that greedy construction foreman!"
The monsters: Now that's getting the blood pumping!
A secondhand group chat admin's professional instincts kicked in, and even in the horror world, they didn't let up: "Selling secondhand horror items, secondhand talents, secondhand monsters! Slight flaws, make me an offer! I'll help with your National College Advertising Art Competition project and pick up your horror app deliveries!"
The monsters: S-slight flaws?!
In a summoning instance, Shanghai Bro struck a Pokemon pose. "Come forth! Bistro Manager!" Guangdong Bro wasn't about to be outdone. "Come forth! Guangzhou Restaurant Server!" Beijing Bro cut in. "You two, move aside. Come forth! Taxi Driver!"
The monsters: Are you sure you want to cross the Yangtze with summons like these?
But that wasn't even the most outrageous part. The most outrageous was...
(During the livestream:
Qingxin (the ruthless version, determined to leave the instance unharmed): This is a moment of peril, with the instance boss right on my heels. Time to summon my teammates to take the hits!
Qingxin's dormmate No. 1 (the crazed MVP-grinding version): Ha ha! Nobody's stealing the key points from me! Knocks her teammates flying!
Qingxin's dormmate No. 2 (knocked to the ground, waiting for her grab-bag talent's cooldown): Having you all around is such a blessing...
Qingxin's dormmate No. 3 (deafened by her grab-bag talent's side effect): Huh? What? What did you say? How'd you end up on the ground?
Instance boss, overjoyed: Excellent! One is right in front of me, one is an idiot, one is disabled, and one is deaf. This is my win...
Then the boss watched in disbelief as, led by that neurotic code-wielding Taoist, the four "frail" college girls from different majors beat each other up while beating up the monsters. Every die roll came up a failure, yet somehow they still destroyed every instance in complete, glorious chaos.
The four dormmates, all together: Hee hee, that's the power of our bond!
Instance boss: I give up. Please spare me!
Director Zhang of Bureau 749: Send them over. Recruit them!
How dare a mere infinite-flow System challenge the machinery of the state!
The college students: Does that mean we'll get government jobs, Director?
A story about college students with special abilities, each with their own identities in Bureau 749, including Taoist priests, shamans, and nuns, selected by an advanced civilization for a livestreamed horror show. Inspired by dorm-room banter, it's an ensemble story about a bunch of totally unhinged college students. The big boss handpicked college kids it thought would be easy to bully to decide the world's fate, only for these "crazy," terrifyingly pure and dumb college students, organized by the machinery of the state, to smash the instances to pieces. Every last one of them is a menace.
Expect jokes about all kinds of majors, all kinds of ridiculous abilities, even magical-girl transformations (they're college students with all sorts of skills, after all; at heart, this is a silly comedy), and jokes about different provinces. The college students' hilarious day-to-day exchanges go like: [This horror thing is from your hometown?] [No! It's from yours!]
The heroine seems like an ordinary college girl who loves cosplaying characters from Daoist Guixian. In reality, her only weakness is money. She's a sleep-loving, narcissistic, thick-skinned ENTP. A Chinese-style witch and a computer-science Taoist priest, she draws talismans with code and uses copper coins as computer chips. A professional who blends a double degree in Eastern and Western studies into one. As someone from Lu, she plays cards with her fellow disciples outside the Taoist temple every night, so she draws talismans with playing cards. The four dormmates are a mutually sabotaging comedy quartet, and the entire main cast is female. The instances are a chaotic hodgepodge of nonsense, so little angels, just have fun reading! x
There is a male lead and a sweet romance between a college guy and a college girl, but they're both crazy.
[An international student tears through space-time and shouts: Don't forget us overseas students and our international friends!!!]
A story about the young.
Theme: Stay forever young, and forever speak rudely.
