Times are changing, and the Celestial Court is keeping up. To show off his wisdom and might, and give the gods of the Celestial Court a chance to relax after working diligently for thousands of years, the Divine Emperor of the Six Realms claps his hands and teams up with Qu Jiangyan, the Eternal Fate Celestial Venerable who oversees the Palace of Destiny, to organize a relaxation event for the immortals. He also assigns Mountain Yin Xue, a grass-roots genius and God of War who has never gotten along with the Eternal Fate Celestial Venerable, to help plan the immortals' journey to the mortal realm.
But after the two sworn enemies spend dozens of days bickering and impeaching each other at the Celestial Court's morning audience, their hard-won "vacation plan" is disrupted by a Demon God who has escaped its seal. All the assembled gods are wiped out, and the out-of-control Reincarnation Platform casts them down to the mortal realm, stripping them of their divine powers and making them mortals.
Uh...and other things, too. They can only return to the Celestial Court after completing the tribulation scripts written by the Reincarnation Platform.
The Hundred Flowers Immortal was supposed to fall in love with a young general in a human dynasty, but instead becomes a spear. To complete her script, she desperately tries to convince the young general to spend his wedding night with a real spear, claiming she can save him the cost of the wedding candles. Every little bit saved counts, and she is definitely a thrifty match.
The Divine Emperor, Crown Prince Jinwu, was supposed to become an idle, carefree prince of wealth and privilege in the human realm. Instead, he becomes the disgraced crown prince of a former dynasty, locked in prison as soon as he is born and still nursing, and caught up in a struggle over the identities of the real and fake crown princes. He is currently out of contact.
The utterly righteous Great Emperor of the Pardoning Justice Bureau wants to see how the human realm handles its legal cases. The moment he opens his eyes, he is confronted with a pile of wrongful convictions and miscarriages of justice. Not only has he become a corrupt official, but everyone around him ignores the law. Furious, he raises an army and rebels in the lower realm, only to be assigned a domineering vassal prince's "fall in love with me and chase me" romance.
The unlucky Lord Wenchang doesn't even know where the malfunctioning Reincarnation Platform has thrown him. Passing the imperial examinations and coming first should be a piece of cake if he wants to complete his script, but all kinds of accidents keep happening, and he repeatedly fails. The exams drive people so mad that they kneel before his statue in his own Wenchang Temple. It seems he's already forgotten that he's a god.
The Reincarnation Platform, driven mad by the Demon God's influence, doesn't spare its two project managers, either.
The Eternal Fate Celestial Venerable and the God of War, who can hurl eight million words of abuse at each other at morning audience every day, open their eyes to a sea of red flowers, a wedding procession stretching ten miles, parents-in-law, a matchmaker, and thousands of guests.
A man beating a gong calls out, "The auspicious hour has arrived! The newlyweds may now bow to one another!"
The Eternal Fate Celestial Venerable and the God of War exchange a glance and faint at the sight of all the festive red characters.
The Eternal Fate Celestial Venerable and the God of War of the Six Realms truly cannot stand each other. Even among all the clever people in the Celestial Court, no one can figure out how these two can be so hostile.
Their political views clash, their achievements are in competition, and their paths of cultivation are completely different. Even their clothing colors are at odds: one favors red, gold, and black, while the other prefers blue, silver, and white.
The Eternal Fate Celestial Venerable looks down on the God of War, who rose from humble mortal beginnings, because he belongs to the Divine Emperor's favored clan. The God of War, in turn, calls the Eternal Fate Celestial Venerable a supervisor of the lower realms, servile and obsequious, for blindly following the foolish Divine Emperor and obeying his every word.
Who could have guessed that fate would be so absurd that even the gods couldn't predict it? After an accident, under the Reincarnation Platform's "red thread," the two become a "married couple" in the blink of an eye. From the start, they're thrown into the hellish scenario of their wedding night.
At first, Shan Yin Xue feels like his very soul is going to throw up. Later...
A certain God of War, pretending to be a loving "husband" with the Eternal Fate Celestial Venerable so he can return to the Celestial Court and kill the rampaging Demon God as soon as possible, feels like he may have uncovered a shocking secret.
The gods and demons of the Six Realms, the powerless people of the Hundred Schools, the Heavenly Dao's tyranny, Heaven and Earth showing no mercy and treating all things like straw dogs. The path of cultivation is vast, with countless avenues. A great Confucian scholar's poem can protect the world, the Moists' mechanical Great Wall stretches for a thousand miles, and the Daoists understand the truth of the seasons. Even those who devote themselves to a single path among the countless ways of immortality struggle to master it.
Back then, Shan Yin Xue pursued only the path of "war." Though he knew the root cause of the Six Realms' mountains of corpses and rivers of blood, he still fought his way to the Celestial Palace in a mortal body, forcing the Divine Emperor to recruit him as a divine minister and bestow on him the title of God of War of the Six Realms. Yet he could do nothing to shake the "laws" that bathed the world in golden light.
He never expected someone else to share his vision, someone even more resolute and crazed than he was, willing to drag down the entire Six Realms for it.
Using the Six Realms as a game board, the gods and himself as pieces, and the Heavenly Dao as his opponent, he wagers everything before true despair arrives, fighting until both sides are destroyed, neither living nor dying.
At first, Shan Yin Xue thinks that he and Qu Jiangyan are simply political enemies who won't rest until the other is dead. Whenever they meet, all he can say is, "Ugh!"
Later, Shan Yin Xue sees the unbending pride beneath that man's cold face and humble bows. He straightforwardly offers his own fervor and sincerity. "Whoa, I had no idea you were a Demon Clan spy! What, if they don't call me back soon, I'll end up as the Heavenly Emperor? But I figure the Demon Clan and the Demon God are just your pieces, too. You're playing big, and I like it. Brother, let's do this together!"
Later still, Shan Yin Xue clutches the Eternal Fate Celestial Venerable around the waist, sobbing his heart out. "We've already had our wedding ceremony! My wife cannot be a god who abandons me after seducing me, against the laws of the divine!"
The gods of the Celestial Court accidentally reincarnate in the mortal realm to undergo tribulations, only to find the lower realm in chaos. They end up taking the lead in reforming it, rediscovering the true meaning of godhood and the laws of the Heavenly Dao, and fighting against extraterrestrial evil. In fact, it's a comedy.
There are characters close to the bottom, but only in the way a ruler and his subject are close. The top and bottom have huge mutual feelings for each other from the start.
Couple: The "I'm the best in the world" God of War, an upright, no-nonsense, justice-loving rebel against Heaven x The Eternal Fate Celestial Venerable, a master of patience, enduring humiliation and making long-term plans, saying one thing and meaning another, an emperor who moonlights in every faction
Mutual healing, heroes who recognize and admire one another.
An eclectic pantheon, folk legends and customs from different regions, a human dynasty inspired by the Tang, a cultivation system based on the contention of a hundred schools, a blend of various cultivation paths, the path to godhood, Daoist systems, the Primordial era, and folk beliefs. Some writing draws inspiration from Taibai Jinxing Is a Bit Troubled. A silk-punk cultivation world with a very modern sensibility, a mythological world in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that has entered the steam age in full.
Theme: I too have drifted for a long time. For a thousand years, I've repaid grace with betrayal, friend and mentor alike. My brief life ends as I part from the one who understands me. Tell me, does life become this bleak in the end?
