Synopsis:
Uchiha Obito was born into a world steeped in rural folklore and the supernatural.
This world is home to monsters, ghosts, gods, zombies, and City Gods...
Every morning when he gets up, he has to offer three sticks of incense to the coffin in his bedroom. Only after the coffin has had its fill and lets out a satisfied burp can he go out and get on with his day.
Inside the coffin is a thousand-year-old zombie.
The great mage Minato Namikaze, who has come to the town to teach in the countryside, says the thing is ominous. A bloody calamity hangs over Obito, and he must get rid of the coffin as soon as possible.
Obito refuses.
His parents died long ago, and the old zombie in the coffin, who calls himself Obito's ancestor, is the only family he has left in the world.
Obito also has a childhood sweetheart who has passed away.
One day, she visits him in a dream. She tells him that because she performed good deeds and accumulated merit before her death, the Six Paths took notice and appointed her the local City God. She asks Obito to build her a little City God temple, so they can meet in their dreams from then on.
Obito thinks that sounds wonderful.
He is grateful to the immortal known in the legends as the Six Paths.
One day,
on his way home from the City God temple, he encounters a long, slender weasel spirit. It stands upright like a person, its fists clasped, and asks him to grant it a title.
"Do I look more like a human or a god?"
The weasel's voice is low and powerful. Obito says, "You look like a distant younger brother I've never met before..."
As soon as the words leave his mouth, the weasel spirit transforms into a human. It sits on the ground, looking utterly bewildered: a twelve-year-old boy with long hair and a pair of nasolabial lines.
He stares blankly at Obito and says, "Huh???"
Overjoyed, Obito carries him home and says, "Well, would you look at that! Now I've got a little brother..."
A grandpa, a wife, and a little brother... Obito finally has something to look forward to in life.
The weasel spirit sighs helplessly in Obito's arms. "All right, I decided to come ask you for a title... I guess this is my misfortune... This is my own fault."
"My name is Itachi." He clears his throat and says, "I hope we'll get along from now on, big brother."
The day after he brings the weasel spirit home,
Obito is sitting at home when he hears a knock at the door.
A white snake wearing a tiny red hood is coiled outside his door, tapping on it with the tip of its tail.
"Hey, friend! I heard you can grant monsters titles and turn them into immortals. Come on, do I look more like a human or an immortal to you???"
Obito grabs the white snake by the neck. "Get lost... Who stands outside someone's house spouting nonsense when they're trying to go to work!"
The white snake looks at him innocently, coils around twice, and flicks the tip of its tail. "Fine, if that's how you want it... Sorry about that! I'll come see you tonight instead."
That night,
the white snake crawls onto Obito's pillow and coils around his neck, speaking sweetly. "Hey... do I look more like a human or an immortal to you???"
"You look like a white-haired little boy who'll do whatever I say... Hey, hey, hey! Don't touch my grandpa's coffin lid!!! Careful, he'll come back to life! I was wrong, you're the Six Paths Sage! Big brother! You look exactly like the Six Paths Sage!"
A flash of white eyes passes by.
The snake immortal, dressed in a red robe, sits grinning on the lid of Obito's grandpa's coffin and points a toe at him.
"Good boy... I'll come repay you one day."
Before leaving, the snake immortal leaves a little clay figurine of a dragon-horned immortal on the lid of Obito's grandpa's coffin.
Every day when Obito offers incense to the coffin, he casually breaks off a little piece and feeds it to the figurine, too.
The little weasel spirit he brought home tells him that from now on, the snake should count as their household guardian spirit.
"I could've been your household guardian spirit, too... It's all because you said the wrong thing."
The little weasel spirit looks very serious as he scolds Obito. It's pretty cute.
Obito says, "Oh, what would I even need a household guardian spirit for? I don't need one."
A young little brother is cuter anyway...
One day,
Itachi brings home another new little brother for him.
A lone eagle.
Itachi names him Sasuke.
"He's a deity who descended to the mortal world to undergo a tribulation... I'm not confident he'll be safe, so I'll look after him through his transformation before letting him go out into the human world."
As the little weasel spirit says this, Obito looks at his wallet and thinks he'll probably have to take on another job if he's going to support the two of them.
Obito now has two jobs.
His first job is running errands at an art gallery.
His senior colleague is a blond sculptor.
His senior colleague's senior is a scorpion spirit with immense cultivation and powerful magic, who is also a sculptor...
This job pays him 3,000 yuan a month.
He also has a second job.
His second job is looking after the child of Minato Namikaze, who teaches in the countryside.
Minato Namikaze claims to be a great mage trained in the orthodox school of the mystic arts, and says he even has a license. He has come to teach in the countryside to build up his moral credentials before returning to run for head of the mystic arts school.
Obito isn't entirely convinced.
Because the son of this great mage of the mystic arts is a fox spirit who hasn't even learned how to take human form...
Every day, Obito takes the little fox spirit to and from school, and has to cook and do his laundry, too.
This job pays more, depending on how much extra money Minato makes that month.
Minato scrapes by on his salary as a teacher. All the money he earns performing rituals for people goes to Obito and Naruto to split between them.
So Obito takes a keen interest in Minato's side business.
Every day, he posts online everywhere, advertising the services of a prospective head of the orthodox mystic arts school, who handles all kinds of wedding and funeral rites, as well as monster hunting and exorcisms.
The money from these two jobs is just enough to support Obito and the little weasel spirit, Uchiha Itachi, at home, but not enough to support the lone eagle Itachi brought back, who is supposedly a deity undergoing a tribulation in the mortal world.
Obito has no choice but to look for a third job.
His boss at his third job is a cripple...
The cripple's name is Nagato.
Nagato says, "I've got a big plan... Let's go rob a tomb!"
Obito: "Huh????"
Anyway,
this is Uchiha Obito, an ordinary little guy living a peaceful life, day after day, in this ordinary world.
