She is stunned.

At seven, she enters the palace for the first time. An old eunuch sneers, "A woman serving as an official? Unheard of, past or present."

She lowers her head and grinds ink, copying all sixty chapters of the Han Code a hundred times.

At fifteen, she becomes a Gentleman of the Palace Secretariat. The Grand Minister of Ceremonies shakes his head. "A hen crowing at dawn is no blessing for the state."

She silently sorts through memorials from across the land, spotting signs of impending Yellow River floods in the canal transport figures.

At twenty-three, she takes charge of the Secretariat. The Chancellor berates her: "A woman of the Huo clan dares to meddle in government!"

She slowly unfurls a map. "My lords, do you know how many more times the four commanderies of Hexi can be supplied with provisions?"

At first, all she wanted was to survive. But staying alive means she must climb to the top.

She does not want to be Huo Qubing's dazzling little sister or Huo Guang's subordinate, however powerful he may be. She wants to be herself.

She wants to leave her mark in the history books, not be an insignificant speck in this vast world, or a name swept away with the rest of the clan.

"Why choose this path?" a newly arrived palace maid asks timidly, gazing at her dark robes and cool, composed face.

She looks out past the palace gates at the countless lights of home:

"Because I want the women of this world to know that we can do more than support our husbands and raise our children.

We can rule this land and its people, too."

"Don't say women are inferior to men. I will make the men of this world bow before me."

Content warnings:

1. The story will feature controlling the emperor to command the feudal lords.

2. The Emperor dies before he gets much of a chance to go on a rampage.
