Lovers in the Server Room at Midnight [Hong Kong Y2K Vibe]

The old internet cafe on Temple Street was like a shadowy nook at the edge of the city: too noisy by day, too quiet by night.

A Che worked the day shift at the front desk, collecting discarded cards and filling out reports. Every now and then, she secretly logged in to her own alt account, [Hi,1999].

She thought nobody had noticed the computer she had left on, until one night in the early hours, a private offline message suddenly popped up on the screen.

"Before you reboot the System next time, give me five minutes. I haven't finished closing my windows."

The sender's nickname was CTRL+ALT+ME.

He seemed like an old internet addict, but his messages were unexpectedly gentle and restrained, like a kind of companionship programmed in advance.

A Che didn't tell anyone. She began waiting for those messages, leaving a few words in reply before each shutdown, and even imagining that this person was waiting for her, too.

What she didn't know was that he really was waiting for her.

His name was Lu Li. He had once been a third-rate underground prizefighter, but after retiring due to vertigo, he drifted into an internet cafe and took a night shift repairing computers.

Between bouts of insomnia and headaches, he typed with the one finger that wouldn't shake,

leaving messages of self-rescue in an abandoned System, all for the sake of finding someone who would listen to him.

They fell in love online, yet passed each other by in real life.

Then one night, during a power outage, in the five minutes before the internet cafe rebooted, she heard him say softly in the darkness, "You're online."
