The Narcissus and the Puppy

Chen Yu was born deaf and mute, forgotten by the entire world.

Until one experiment implanted a secondary personality, Xiang Yuzhen, inside him.

She was cold and domineering, training him like a puppy.

"Look up at me. Tell me, whose are you?"

Through repeated commands and punishments,

he learned to speak, to cry, and to say his first complete sentence.

"I love you."

The doctor watched coldly, intent on erasing her.

But Chen Yu cried out in a broken voice, "She's here! She is me!"

In the eyes of the world, he is lonely and taciturn.

In his own world, he has long since learned to coexist with his one and only lover.

Reader's Guide:

1. Scientific experiments and training a secondary personality help restore his ability to speak. The metaphor is self-love: a lonely person finds wholeness by coexisting with a personality within. Chen Yu regains some ability to speak, but remains lonely in the real world. He and Xiang Yuzhen choose to coexist, finding a way to love himself that makes sense to him.
