I Quit My Job and Returned Home to Live in the Countryside [Gourmet]

The dream everyone has came true for office worker Song Wenmiao: after buying lottery tickets for ages, she really did wake up one day to find she'd won ten million yuan.

Song Wenmiao immediately quit her job, packed her bags, and returned to the warm embrace of her hometown.

Her family was thrilled. Miao Miao was back, and now the whole family could be together again.

Her grandparents had farmed all their lives, raising pigs and chickens.

Song Wenmiao built them a new pigsty and bought a few piglets.

The pigsty was spotless, and the piglets wagged their tails as they snorted away at their food. Her grandparents couldn't have been happier.

Her mother's braised dishes and cold salads were excellent, and the neighbors loved them.

But working outside in wind and rain was hard, and with the city undergoing renovations, she had to close for a few days every month.

Song Wenmiao checked out all the shops along the street at the market by the village entrance, picked the best corner spot, and bought it outright for her mother.

Her mother ran her hands over the bright, open kitchen and gleaming stainless-steel worktops, smiling from ear to ear.

Now that she had a shop of her own, she had boundless energy for everything.

Even the regular foodies said the cold salads and braised dishes were getting tastier and tastier, with the sweetness of the owner's life mixed in.

The flatbreads and stir-fried rice noodles Song Wenmiao made had a wonderful wok hei, making the little shop busier and busier.

She got up early to pick vegetables from their own fields while they were still covered in dew.

Standing at the stove, she tossed the rice noodles in the wok and called out to the neighbors to line up, promising there was plenty for everyone.

Once the mother-daughter team opened for business, the shop stayed busy from morning until night, serving the neighbors breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night snacks.

Song Wenmiao remembered how everyone in the city seemed to livestream whatever they did, so she started one, too.

Unexpectedly, it took off, and more and more people drove out to eat at the little shop.

A village official sent to help with poverty alleviation showed up at the restaurant holding unsold farm produce. "Miao Miao, come show your face on camera. I guarantee we'll sell this stuff like crazy."

The jackfruit in their arms looked heavy. Thinking of its rich fragrance, Song Wenmiao couldn't help drooling.

"Um, I can eat this, right?"

So she ate it enthusiastically on camera, helping the village's unsold jackfruit find buyers overseas.
