The Failed Phoenix Man

After more than twenty years of living an ordinary, uneventful life, Chen Liu is finally about to make it big.

Not through a promotion or a raise, and not by winning the lottery, but because he's dating a rich, beautiful heiress.

His girlfriend, Kong Siming, is lively and cheerful, and has an easygoing personality. She often teases Chen Liu, though, and sometimes she acts strangely, staring intently at him before breaking into a sweet smile whenever he turns around. It makes Chen Liu feel as if his girlfriend... were two different people.

But Chen Liu doesn't mind. His girlfriend comes from an excellent family, rich and powerful. She's the daughter of the richest family in the Upper District, the Kongs. There are only two children in the family, which means his girlfriend will inherit a considerable fortune one day.

Chen Liu has staked everything on his girlfriend, dreaming of marrying into wealth and using her to climb the social ladder. Of course, he loves her, but getting out of the Lower District would be even better.

Chen Liu caters to his girlfriend's every whim and goes along with everything she wants.

At last, on an ordinary morning, Chen Liu marries into the Kong family.

Then he meets a man who looks almost exactly like his girlfriend: his wife's older brother, Kong Siyu.

Chen Liu is Kong Siyu's brother-in-law, and of course... his wife, too.

His younger sister, Kong Siming, has always loved to have fun and tease people. That day, the two of them went down to the Lower District together.

A man hit on Kong Siming. That man was Chen Liu.

Kong Siyu has never cared for men who can't conceal their ambition and are single-mindedly bent on climbing the social ladder. But his sister came skipping back, her eyes crinkling just like before, with a mischievous idea: "Big brother, I've thought of something fun."

And so the Kong twins, Kong Siming and Kong Siyu, took turns being the "girlfriend" of Chen Liu, a low-level office worker. They kept it up until Kong Siming got bored and left, and Chen Liu married into the Kong family. Then his "girlfriend" finally became just one person.

On the wedding day, Kong Siyu watched from the shadows as Chen Liu, dressed in a black suit, stared blankly at the Kongs' lavish home. His eyes were full of ambition, of a desire to possess it all. Kong Siyu's lips curled into a secret smile.

That night, Chen Liu, flushed red with drunkenness and dreaming of wealth and success, was pinned beneath a tall, muscular man whose face he couldn't see and was fucked.

On his wedding night, the groom was taken. When Chen Liu woke again, he looked at his unaware "wife" and secretly swore to conceal what had happened and hold on to his status at all costs.

Then he'd find that man and kill him.

Chen Liu looked at his brother-in-law, who had always seemed to dislike him, and ruled him out first.
