Tu Mi was a pretty but pitiful corporate drone. At just 25, he was worked to the bone by his unscrupulous company and came down with a serious illness.
To recuperate, he quit his job and returned to his village. He inherited the little convenience store his grandmother had left behind and decided to lie flat in this scenic, remote mountain retreat.
But he regretted it on the very first night. The store's door was old and rickety, there were no goods on the shelves, the room he was staying in leaked, and upstairs, the mice were throwing a party...
How was he supposed to recover here? He'd leave tomorrow!
But by the end of the month, even though the weather was getting hot, he still hadn't left. Not only that, the store was doing well.
The villagers all said he looked so delicate, like he couldn't carry a load or lift a finger. They never expected him to be so hardworking, or so deeply attached to his grandmother that he would stay and look after the shop she left behind, tucked away in these remote mountains.
Tu Mi listened, half graciously accepting the compliments and half feeling terribly guilty.
He felt guilty because he'd fallen for the handsome young man who lived next door.
Grandma Chi had said he was seven years younger than him.
Chi Amo was an orphan. Grandma Chi, who made ink, had taken him in when he was little and taught him her craft. Because of his stutter, he had never liked talking much. But lately, the new neighbor next door had been teasing a whole year's worth of words out of him.
"What's your name?" "You're so tall~" "Do you have someone you like?" "Look at those muscles~" "Oh, you've got my hand dirty~"
His neighbor had a clear, sweet voice, a small face, and a pointed chin. When he spoke, his bright, bead-like eyes held a sly smile, like a cat up to no good.
Chi Amo stared at the ink stain he'd accidentally left on the man's wrist, blushing and at a loss. All he could do was stammer, "I-I'll wipe it, wipe it off for you."
By the time Tu Mi had almost recovered, the boy had finally caught on. Even with his face red and his nerves on edge, he knew to hold tight to Tu Mi's hand and murmur, "I like you," before tilting up his face to kiss him.
Tu Mi counted on his fingers, then suddenly sat bolt upright. "Wait?! You're only seventeen?!"
Run! Run away tonight! Get on a train and flee!
Chi Amo, who was about to turn 19: ???
