Reading Danger in the I Ching (Mystery)

Xun Shu's main business is carving floral designs into coffins; her side hustle is setting up a fortune-telling stall. Everything goes smoothly, and she has no taboos, until she brings a man home.

She thinks she's picked up a god of wealth, but it turns out he's a jinx.

From then on, Xun Shu keeps getting dragged into murder cases, and even becomes a murder suspect herself.

Relying on her divination skills, Xun Shu turns bad luck into good and finds the real culprit, earning herself the nickname Little Immortal.

Just as she's basking in her success, the coffin shop is attacked. Everyone inside is missing or presumed dead, and Xun Shu is the only one who escapes unharmed.

Every clue points to that jinx, but he's nowhere to be found.

Grinding her teeth, Xun Shu plots how to track him down, all the while covering a room with talismans to curse the ungrateful, unappreciative jinx.

Li Xuanhe, an assistant minister at the Court of Judicial Review, is ambushed and attacked. Wounded, he flees into the mountains, where Xun Shu saves him.

While waiting for his attendants to come to the rescue, he unexpectedly discovers that Xun Shu has countless ties to the Celestial Observatory, which he has been investigating for years.

So he pretends to have lost his memory, takes the name He Xuan, and makes himself at home in the coffin shop.

Li Xuanhe has been praised as mature and levelheaded since childhood, but life at the coffin shop often makes Xun Shu drive him up the wall.

And yet, he rather likes it.

Until the day disaster strikes the coffin shop.

He arrives a step too late and loses track of her.

[Ghost-hunting and demon-slaying stories, mystery and deduction, happy ending, two strong leads, please add to your collection!]

After Xingye came of age, the elders in her family told her two things, one good and one bad.

The good news was that they were the last divine clan, a rare species.

The bad news was that they were a fallen divine clan, and their whole family had short lives.

Immortals have no way to live forever, but mortals do! Apparently, mortals are always searching for immortality!

Xingye refuses to accept her fate. She sneaks into a sect to cultivate immortality, raids tombs in search of elixirs of life, and asks long-lived little demons for the secret to living forever...

She hears that the people at the Celestial Observatory have looked the same for a hundred years and know the secret to immortality, so Xingye decides to sneak in and take a look.

-

The Celestial Observatory has a director named Yan Qi, a mortal who has lived for nearly a thousand years, spending those millennia wandering around with nothing to do.

The Celestial Observatory has an office called the Calamity Crossing Bureau. Its job is to alleviate suffering in the mortal world and maintain order across the six realms. In practice, that means hunting ghosts and subduing demons.

Xingye may be a member of a divine clan, but if she wants to learn the secret to immortality, she has to join the Celestial Observatory. And to join the Celestial Observatory, she has to work for a mortal...

Yan Qi looks at her with a gentle smile, as soft as a breeze in the mountains. "As a Calamity Crossing Officer, you can hunt ghosts and subdue demons to earn extra years of life."

Xingye immediately puts on her official robes and says with a cheerful grin, "These clothes really do look good!"
