In the summer of 2019, Zhuang Ding, who had spent eleven years being known as Cheng Wanyi's "childhood friend," prepared flowers and a gift and nervously broached the subject:
"We said we'd go to college in the same city."
The wind rustled through the treetops, soft and refreshing, but Cheng Wanyi's answer was as cold as a blade:
"Staying in Jiangling to attend military college is the best choice for you."
The remark had two barbs. First, she directly rejected Zhuang Ding and treated their old promise as a joke. Second, she belittled a talented student who could get into a top university, claiming he was only good enough for a local military college with very low admission scores for men.
In an instant, the wind stopped and the lights went out. A bunch of daisies, left by someone unknown, appeared in the roadside shrubs.
Seven years later, at a reunion during their school's anniversary celebration, Cheng Wanyi, who always bragged that she could "hold her liquor," was left dizzy and unsteady after one Long Island iced tea mixed incorrectly. She nearly fell headfirst into the sink, but a strong arm behind her caught her.
She raised her head hazily and, half-asleep, saw his upright figure in the mirror above the sink. She suddenly grinned.
"Zhuang Ding."
"I miss you so much."
Because I miss you, because I want you to be happy for the rest of your life, we should never see each other again.
