Deep Spring

That autumn, Zhou Zeshan donated an osmanthus tree to the school.

A little wooden plaque hung from its trunk, bearing four words:

Lin He belongs here.

In the end, Lin He realized that her roots would forever remain planted in that spring, entwined tightly around the base of that osmanthus tree.

In the summer of 2019, Zhuang Ding, who had spent eleven years being known as Cheng Wanyi's childhood friend, solemnly prepared flowers and a gift, then tentatively said to her:

"We said before that we'd go to university in the same city."

The breeze stirred the treetops, soft and refreshing, but Cheng Wanyi's answer was as cold as a blade:

"Staying in Jiangling and going to military academy is the best choice for you."

Her words carried a double insult. First, she rejected Zhuang Ding outright and treated their old promise as a joke. Second, she belittled Zhuang Ding, who had the ability to get into a top university, by saying he was only fit to stay local and attend a military academy with very low admission scores for boys.

In an instant, the wind died and the lights went out. A bunch of daisies, left behind by someone unknown, lay in the roadside bushes.

At a school reunion seven years later, Cheng Wanyi, who always boasted that she could hold her liquor, was left reeling by a Long Island iced tea mixed incorrectly. She nearly fell headfirst into the sink, but a strong arm behind her caught her.

She raised her head hazily and, half asleep, saw the upright figure behind her in the mirror. Suddenly, she grinned:

"Zhuang Ding."

"I've missed you so much."

Because I've missed you, because I want you to be happy for the rest of your life, let's not see each other again.

There's nothing more to say. I only hope you're happy.
