A Fake Story

In the summer of 2019, Zhuang Ding had spent eleven years being called her "childhood sweetheart." With a solemn air, he brought flowers and a gift and tentatively said to Cheng Wanyi:

"We said we'd go to college in the same city."

The breeze stirred the treetops, gentle and refreshing. Cheng Wanyi's reply, however, was as cold as a blade:

"Your best choice is to stay in Jiangling and attend military school."

There were two barbs in those words: first, she rejected Zhuang Ding outright and treated their old promise like a joke; second, she belittled him, despite his ability to get into a top university, as someone fit only for a local military academy with very low admission scores for male students.

In an instant, the wind died and the lights went out. A bouquet of daisies, left behind by someone unknown, appeared in the roadside bushes.

At a school reunion seven years later, Cheng Wanyi, who always boasted that she could drink anyone under the table, was left reeling after one Long Island Iced Tea had been mixed wrong. She nearly fell headfirst into the sink, but a strong arm caught her from behind.

She raised her head in a daze. Half asleep, she saw the straight-backed figure behind her in the mirror and suddenly grinned.

"Zhuang Ding."

"I miss you so much."

Because I miss you, because I want you to be happy for the rest of your life, we should never meet again.
